Μια ομάδα δυτών υποβρυχίων σπηλαίων καταδύεται στο πιο όμορφο και ανεξερεύνητο σύστημα σπηλαίων του κόσμου. Την αποτελούν ο Φρανκ ΜακΓκίρ, ένας δεξιοτέχνης εξερευνητής, ο 17χρονος γιος του, Τζος, και ο δισεκατομμυριούχος χρηματοδότης Καρλ Χάρλεϊ. Όταν μια τροπική καταιγίδα ξεσπά ξαφνικά, η μόνη διέξοδος τους αποκόπτεται λόγω μεγάλης ροής νερού, αναγκάζοντάς τους έτσι να μετακινηθούν.
